Dyson wished to enter the smart lighting B2B & B2C markets with a range of smart home task lights & suspended lights developed around the precise spatial & spectral control possible with LED technology.
The Dyson CSYS, Lightcycle, & Solarcycle Morph product ranges were smart, connected task lights engineered to support your body clock by tracking natural light at your time, date & location.
Dyson Cubeam is a range of suspended lights built from the ground up for high power chip on board LEDs. A single high power source was selected because it creates a single shadow & casts it behind you, avoiding shading your work.
The high power density of chip on board LEDs required novel heatpipe cooling solutions that dominated the development of form.
Conducted literature reviews with Neuroscientists at Oxford University to set product performance specifications, scope user trials designed to demonstrate efficacy, & provide legal substantiation for market claims.
Brought this work to life through writing & recording Dyson marketing videos.
Created the programmatic definition of natural light for any date, time, or location for use in firmware & validated it using statistical data analysis of atmospheric simulations & an experimental database of over 1 million daylight recordings.
Conducted psycho-physic experiments to understand the perceived “naturalness” of a light in terms of CIE 1974 u’10 v’10, TM-30-15 Rf, TM-30-15 Rg & luminous flux; metrics which together fully define a user’s physical visual response to a light in order to set tolerances for the closeness of the match between the light output & natural light.
Established & led the department responsible for R&D of novel technology for smart home lighting products
Positioned Dyson as a thought leader in smart lighting for health & wellbeing
Substantiated core market claims with scientific research
Enabled strategic R&D investments through technology scouting
Developed the core technology enabling the launch of 4 smart lighting product ranges
